The Ruy Lopez represents one of the oldest and best openings for the first player, and everyone going for the Spanish game with Black faces the question of how he wants to tackle the white ideas.
One of the more aggressive fighting methods is the move order 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0–0 b5 6.Bb3 Bb7. Which was developed in the early sixties by players from the north Russian town of Archangelsk and has carried this name ever since.
Later, the variation was intensively analyzed by players from Lviv – among them Mikhalchishin and Beliavsky – and applied in tournament practice.
In the second half of the seventies, it gained great popularity for the first time. In the Archangelsk Variation, Black defines the position of this queen’s bishop early on with 6. … Bb7 in order to exert pressure against the opponent’s center, in particular, the point e4.
White must decide whether he protects this pawn solidly with 7.d3 or goes for the unfathomable complications after 7.c3 Nxe4. Another option is 7.Re1 Bc5 8.c3 d6 9.d4 Bb6, which is closely related to the Moller System.
The experienced trainer and Grandmaster Adrian Mikhalchishin is an outstanding connoisseur of these variations, the ideas of which he goes on to explain in nearly five hours of video playing time.
Aaron Nimzowitsch knew how to teach chess and he knew how to study the middlegame: His advice was to “study typical pawn structures.”
Every typical structure has its typical plans and to know these plans helps you to find your way in these positions.
On this DVD, Grandmaster Adrian Mihalchishin presents and explains the most common central structures every chess player should know: The Hedgehog, the Maroczy, Hanging pawns and the Isolani.
Why is it Grandmasters know which pieces to swap and which pieces to keep or whether to recapture with a piece or with a pawn?
This chess strategy DVD answers these questions that every player at every level has to answer many times during the game.
The greatest difference between GMs and amateurs is not in opening knowledge or in calculating power, but in this simple technique.
The great Botvinnik even said that chess is just multiple exchanges.
He explained Fischer’s technique of play: He never had bad pieces – he always exchanged them for his opponent’s strong pieces.

The centre is the most important part of the battlefield.
In chess, we study various different kinds of centre, some special forms of which were already discussed on the chess strategy DVD ‘Winning Structures’.
But in chess literature, we have a huge lack of educational material on the role of the centre and on the power of pawns and pieces in the centre.
And the most important part which is missing – how to change the pawn structure in the centre.
This is really the knowledge that marks out the champions.
This chess strategy DVD explains how to win using the central approach with the help of classical games played by Botvinnik, Fischer, Rubinstein, Steinitz, and Tal amongst others.
The great Aron Nimzowitsch wrote the key sentence: Neither attack nor defence is the essence of positional play, but prophylaxis!
Prophylaxis consists of different measures taken against the opponent’s tactical threats and strategic plans which are shown in this chess strategy DVD.
But don’t think that the prevention of your opponent’s plan is purely defensive.
It is simply part of the preparation of our plan!
This difficult, but extremely important subject is explained on this chess strategy DVD.
With the help of many examples, including classics but also modern games you will learn the importance of prevention and preparation in chess.
In chess strategy, we have certain aims – coordination and the activation of one’s own pieces.
Sometimes we need a special little something to speed up one of these processes – a small material sacrifice, mainly a pawn or pawns.
A dynamic pawn sacrifice is easy to see, as the idea is to get clear gains for the pawn.
Positional pawn sacrifices are much more difficult, as their real purpose does not become clear immediately, but only during the development of the plan.
There were famous masters of positional pawn sacrifices – Bronstein, Kasparov, and Romanishin.
Great players of the past used to say – the most difficult thing in chess strategy is to win won positions!
Every player has such problems – those at the top of the tree and (especially) juniors.
The correct technique consists of proper exchange methods and of the continuation of a correctly chosen plan; it is important not to change chess strategy after a small material gain.
The DVD shows and explains instructive mistakes made when trying to make extra material or a positional advantage count.
Additionally, this DVD demonstrates the correct techniques employed in classic games.
The Soviet grandmaster Vladimir Simagin was one of the first to employ the typical exchange sacrifice: on one hand the Sicilian exchange sacrifice Rxc3, and on the other allowing the ‘exchange’ of a rook on f8 against the white bishop on h6 in order to go on and achieve superiority on the black squares.
Attacks by Tal are presented under ‘Bluffs’, but the theme has a much more all-embracing heading, namely ‘drastically altering the course of a game.
Anybody can carry out double attacks, but how do you bring about the positions in which they are possible? This theme, which is of course partly tactical in nature, is one of the most important ones which can lead to success in chess.
How to take the ideas of other players and then make use of them yourself.
Through his own games, the author shows how to recognize typical mistakes and study them with a view to avoiding them in the future.
To finish off, this chess strategy DVD introduces some legendary Soviet players: Yuri Razuvaev, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, Oleg Dementiev, and Viktor Zheliandinov.
Great players always had and still have more than just broad theoretical knowledge. Every one of them has a favorite chess strategy which simply helps to score more points.
The greatest even have favorite pawn structures! And they immediately exploited the knowledge of others – Alekhine invented some interesting structures, which were copied by his opponent in that game (Rubinstein), and later exploited by Botvinnik and then by Kramnik!
The most popular type of central pawn structure is the isolated pawn.
All classical players employed this structure at a very high level because it was and is considered a must for grandmasters.
And the great Tarrasch said – “Who is afraid of the Isolani, those have to stop chess!” We can say the same about other structures!
Strategic planning is the most difficult part of the game and needed throughout, from the opening to the ending.
Strategic planning is based on an evaluation and that evaluation is based on the different elements of the position.
But what the chess books don’t describe is the direction of the plan.
The aim of every plan is the exploitation of weakness! So, spot the weakness in your position or your opponent’s and then either defend it, repair it or attack it!
There are different kinds of plans, some based on structures and others based on recurring piece constellations.
The author tackles another big subject and gives examples of how to construct plans in positions with pawn majorities on the flanks.
These examples will teach you how to exploit this important positional element properly.
Trainers recommend to beginners to be careful with their own king and to castle as soon as possible.
But at higher levels grandmasters can sense the danger of having the king in the centre much more precisely and in many cases the king in the centre is safe, which allows them to conduct fast flank attacks or to create a powerful centre.
A big fan of such a strategy was Mikhail Botvinnik – he called it ‘the delayed castling strategy’.
In chess, the technique of exchanging pieces is the ultimate knowledge. The biggest specialists of this were such greats as Akiba Rubinstein and Vasily Smyslov. The exchange bishop for a knight is the most common case.
The technique of exploiting the individual power of these pieces is completely different. The bishop is well placed on certain strategical outposts where it controls diagonals or both flanks.
The technique of knight play is much more complicated since this piece can attack weaknesses of any color and thus may change its target many times. The knight is especially strong in the center, in blockade positions, and against doubled pawns – all these cases are explained on this product. Enjoy!
One of the first reactions to it came from the great Akiba Rubinstein – the g3 system, fianchettoing the bishop to g2. After that many systems were tried to refute the Grünfeld and nothing really worked.
So, Rubinstein’s recipe remains a very important positional approach against this dynamic opening.
Maybe the only and best way to fulfill this strategy is the variation with the fianchetto of the white bishop to g2. It is the most unpleasant variation for King’s Indian Defence players, easy to handle and it prevents Black from performing his typical attacking plans.
The skill to find the right move in critical positions makes the difference between winning, drawing or losing.
Here real chess ability shows! On this 60 Minutes renowned and successful coach Adrian Mikhalchishin presents critical positions and shows how to handle them.
An additional database invites you to further training: 50 carefully selected exercises help you to recognize critical moments, to find the best moves in them, and to improve your chess.
Modern chess theory often considers time and development to be more important than material.
Sacrificing pawns has been standard opening practice for centuries but ten or fifteen years ago leading theoreticians developed more and more opening lines in which one side regularly gives up the exchange.
Such sacrifices in the opening lead to strategically and tactically complex positions and give the well-prepared player good winning chances.
On this 60 Minutes renowned and successful coach Adrian Mikhalchishin shows you openings with early exchange sacrifices.
These openings enrich your repertoire, improve your chess, and give you an opportunity to witness the development of modern chess theory.
Young, inexperienced players often have problems in closed positions, because in positions where pawn chains dominate, you have to know the plans.
So when I was a strong grandmaster, I was always a bit afraid of Stonewall positions in the Dutch System.
But one day my friend Aleksander Beliavsky took me aside and showed me a new idea for white: you exchange the bishop on f4 to open the g-line (gxf4) and double the rooks there.
Black will defend his weaknesses on this line with all his power.
Since White has space advantage, he now transfers his pieces to the other wing and creates new weaknesses - and the opponent is helpless.
Beliavsky's brilliant match against Artur Jussupov is a fantastic and instructive example of this great plan.
